The Director of Academic Engagement, in collaboration with the Indiana University (IU) Associate Vice President for Research and AI Innovation and the Indiana Innovation Institute’s (IN3) Director of Ecosystems and Executive Vice President for Science and Technology, will develop and maintain an ecosystem of national and international academic institutions and individual researchers involved in artificial intelligence (AI). Building and sustaining this network will be accomplished through one-on-one engagements, virtual and in-person events, attendance at key conferences, and through various internal and external communications platforms (website, newsletters, social media, technical reports, etc.).
The director will be a focal point for monitoring continued developments in AI and AI-related technologies. In this role the director will maintain technology road maps for critical aspects of AI and inform the Department of Defense (DoD) community of the latest research through a variety of methods.
The director will monitor the needs of the academic community and propose establishment of resources/facilities to enable academic researchers to more effectively support the DoD.
The director of academic engagement will be responsible for establishing and engaging Technical Advisory Groups (TAGS) made up of experts from industry, academia and government that support the assessment of new technologies and their readiness for application to DoD challenges.
Demonstrated success in AI-related research to include associated publications.
Understanding of the challenges associated with transition of academic research to industry or government applications.
Deep understanding of the current state of AI science, current academic research, a vision for the future of AI, and a view to support the need to transition AI to real-world application.
Ability to work collaboratively across organizations and lead the development and operation of multi-organizational/university research or projects.
Strong communication skills and ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical communities.
Demonstrated ability to interact with various social media platforms.
Ability to work in an unstructured, unsupervised, start-up environment with multiple concurrent demands on your time.
PhD degree in computing/engineering/science or related area
Ability to obtain a DoD secret-level clearance or other government agency equivalent
United States Citizenship
5 or more years technical project management experience
Leadership positions within technical societies or similar venues
7-10 years’ post-doctorate experience in artificial intelligence related research and/or product development
Experience with the commercialization and productization of AI/ML
Experience in US DoD, industrial software, or IT programs
Active DoD security clearance
