A highly motivated Senior Communications Specialist (Media Relations) is being sought to join the Fermilab team. The selected candidate will serve as laboratory’s primary contact with the media and public information officers from partner institutions. Responsibilities include developing and executing an international media strategy, pitching story ideas, identifying new media contacts, arranging interviews for media with researchers, preparing employees for media visits, and organizing and guiding media visits.
Develop and evaluate communication strategy focusing on media relations including utilizing: electronic and print publications, websites, social media tools, press releases, media engagement, visits and events, and exhibits and displays.
Prepare and/or review, obtain approval for, and distribute press releases.
Monitor and gather metrics to evaluate media coverage of Fermilab; communicate with senior laboratory management and the Department of Energy regarding media coverage.
Engage public information officers from partner institutions and funding agencies to develop and amplify content and coordinate media activities.
Participate in conferences to develop media contacts and further Fermilab’s reputation; arrange panels for conferences; manage press room at Fermilab-hosted conferences.
Serve as media contact in event of crisis communications.
Provide media training to Fermilab employees and users to interact with media representatives.
Manage compliance and training associated with Fermilab’s communications policy.
Prepare and submit reports to inform key stakeholders of media activities.
Produce, edit, lay out and distribute assigned electronic and print publications and websites using knowledge of a variety of software packages (i.e. WordPress, Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop).
Develop story ideas, conduct interviews and research information, and write articles and press releases.
Establish and maintain effective working relations with a variety of groups including employees, users, partner institutions, and the media.

Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Science/Science Policy, or related field
Minimum five (5) years relevant work experience
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Experience managing media monitoring and distribution services; experience publishing material through a content management system
Project management skills
